Please take the time to mark commas in the music where the text has a comma. Read through the translation – it is literal and needs a bit of poetic imagination, but you will get the gist!

Canons, Grounds and Imitations (D3)

I’m looking forward to leading you in this class with some of my very favorite canons and grounds.

O Virgo Splendens – 3 part – most beautiful on tenor, soprano is Ok. You may choose to read off the single page or the full score.
Machaut Sans Cuer – 3 part preferably on TTT. Alto is Ok, but will need to drop notes that go too low.
Toujours Servir – a gorgeous 4 part canon AAAA. We’ll start by playing in unison (looking at the 4th line) and then split up into parts.
Sunday
Purcell Two in one upon a ground – 3 part AAB. Purcell was an absolute master composer of grounds, and this one is a two-part canon on top of a ground bass. An absolute classic. Memorize the ground bass! Key of c minor.
Maute A tempo giusto (look it up!) – 3 part AAA. We’ll all start by playing the ground (3rd line) then trade off. This is Matthias’ idea to write a piece with the most dissonances! Notice the red squiggles marking all the dissonant notes! Memorize the ground bass. Key of d minor.
